The world is passing through a challenging time on climate change. With exotic pace of development, energy demand is soaring. Thermal power is still a major source of energy across Industries. One of the major concern linked with fossils fuel based thermal power plantsis the environmental pollution which may lead to irreparable damage to the nature and human society if not handled properly.
While on a mission to show case our Green Heroes who are working tirelessly to protect our mother earth from hazardous pollutants.
We showcase, Mr. Prashant Jain, a young and dynamic,Joint Managing Director& CEO of oneof India’s leading power companies, M/s JSW Energy ,having power generation capacity of over 4500 MW.
JSW Group is powering ahead with its committed values towards Environment under Mr Prashant leadership.
Answer: JSW Energy started its commercial operations in year 2000, with the commissioning of its 2x130 MW thermal power plant at Vijayanagar which of its first kind of dual fuel technology boiler using both Corex Gas and well as Coal. Since then, the Company has steadily enhanced its power generation capacity in Thermal space from 260 MW to 3140 MW and has a portfolio of 2 X300 MW at Vijaynagar, 4X300 Mw at Ratnagiri, 8 X 135 MW at Barmer totaling to 3,140 MW. In Hydro space 1,391 MW and 10 MW Solar. Our power plants are across different geographies, have different fuel sources and power off-take arrangements.
“We have come a long way & are committed to pursue growth opportunities in the power and related businesses and contribute to powering our nation”.
Answer: We since the conceptualization phase try to incorporate the state of art technology available in all aspects of power plants. Similar treatment we do for the environmental protection also. We had installed FGD in 2012 at our Ratnagiri Units very well before any of the power plants in India. Similarly we are committed to upgrade our Electrostatic Precipitators at our 1080 MW Barmer Power Plant and we intend to install FGD at our Thermal Power Plants at Vijaynagar. We are in the negotiation stage with the vendors and soon shall be awarding orders.
“We build green belt surpassing norms laid down by MoEF and all this shows our concern for the nature and environment”.
Answer: As far as our Thermal Power Plants are concerned we are always on continual improvement path to reduce Heat rates and Auxiliary Power consumption to reduce carbon footprint. We try our level best to develop the green belt within our plants and the greatest example is the green environment we have created at our Thermal Power Plant at Barmer in midst of Thar desert. It’s an Oasis and people find it hard to believe the kind of greenery that has been developed there. In hardest of the hardest terrains whether be in mine OB dumps or desert’s we do our level best to ascertain Greenery. The ash generated from power plants are suitably given to Cement Plants and for other construction activity and we have attained 100% ash utilization from past many years.
Currently we are developing Hydro Project at Kuther and further we intend to invest to a greater extent in Renewables (Solar & Wind). So on the whole if you see we are taking all necessary initiatives to generate Green Energy and minimize the effects of Thermal Power Plants. We also are suitably engaged with nearby communities wherever we are and take up programs to uplift and touch their lives and try to make them self-dependent. Currently we have taken initiatives to develop sports like High Altitude Boxing at Himanchal and Wrestling at Ratnagiri.
Answer: All our power plants are Zero discharge and no water is left untreated and unused. Each of our plants is equipped with suitable water filters for potable water, state of art Pre-treatment & DM plants which minimize chemical consumption, RO Plants are being used for effluent treatments and its reject is being used for coal spray and ash handling sprays, STP’s for sewerage water etc. We have a committee which reviews the water consumption on day to day basis and we are far below from the norms stipulated by MoEF. Recently we are gradually switching from All Volatile treatment in Boiler water chemistry which shall further improve water utilization.
Answer: Friends Nature is something we should not tamper with and if we do to a certain extent we need to set it right by adopting all necessary technologies to minimize the effect and let not the effluent and the waste that gets generated in the process contaminate our mother earth. Growth and development is inevitable but I also firmly believe that everything is possible whether it is technological advancement and adoption to minimize the effect of the environmental damage we do provided we are ready to spend and use the right kind of technology and resources to address them. “What is most important is a desire and a determination to set it right”.
I can vouch for the entire leaders of the community that no one would be sparing any resources when it comes to caring about our mother earth.
